ELECTRIC CYCLE


An electric bicycle (e-bike, e-bike, etc.) is an electric bicycle with a built-in electric motor for driving assistance. There are many types of e-bikes sold around the world, but they generally fall into two broad categories he. Bikes that assist the rider's pedaling effort (such as a pedelec) and bikes that add a throttle to incorporate moped-style features. Both retain the rider's ability to pedal, so they are  not electric bikes. E-bikes use rechargeable batteries and are typically electrified to 25-32 km/h (16-20 mph). High-performance strains often exceed 45 km/h (28 mph). In some markets, such as Germany in 2013, they have grown in popularity and are taking  market share away from traditional bicycles[2]. Meanwhile, in other markets such as China in 2010, they are replacing fossil fuel mopeds and small motorcycles[3]. [4] 

 

 Depending on local laws, many electric bicycles (such as e-bikes) are legally classified as bicycles rather than mopeds or motorcycles. This frees them from the stricter laws governing the registration and operation of more powerful two-wheeled vehicles, often classified as electric motorcycles. Electric bicycles are also separately defined  and dealt with under their own electric bicycle law. 

 Under UK law the vehicle is called an EAPC or electrically assisted pedal cycle and in EU law it is called an EPAC or electrically power assisted cycle. 

 Electric bicycle is an electric motor-driven variation of the electric bicycle that has been in use since the late 19th century. Some bike-sharing schemes use them. 

 

Background History:

                    In the 1890s, electric bicycles were described in various US patents. For example, U.S. Pat. No. 552,271 issued on  December 31, 1895 to Ogden Bolton Jr.  for a battery-powered bicycle with a "six-pole brush and commutator direct current (DC) hub motor mounted on the rear wheel." was granted.
 
 Two years later, in 1897, his Hosea W. Libbey of Boston invented an electric bicycle powered by  "double electric motors" (US Patent 596,272). The motor is designed inside the hub of the crankset axle.  This model was reinvented and imitated by him in the late 1990s by Giant Lafree E-Bikes.

 The torque sensor and power controller were developed in the late 1990s. For example, in 1997 Yukki Takada  of Japan applied for a patent  for such a device. In 1992, Vector Services Limited offered and sold an electric bicycle called the Zike. The bike included a NiCd battery built into the frame member and  an 850g permanent magnet motor. Despite  Zike, in 1992 there were very few electric bikes on the market. 
 
  Japanese auto giant Yamaha built his one of the first prototype electric bicycles in 1989 and invented the pedal assist system in 1993. 
 
 production increased by an estimated 35% from 1993 to 2004. In contrast, according to Gartner,  regular bicycle production has declined from its peak of 107 million units in 1995. 
 
 American automotive icon Lee Iacocca founded his EV Global Motors, a company that manufactures an electric bicycle model called the E-Bike SX, in 1997. 
 
 While some inexpensive e-bikes used bulky lead-acid batteries,  newer models commonly use NiMH, NiCd, and/or lithium-ion batteries, resulting in lighter, higher-density batteries. was offering Performance varies. However, the latter battery type generally provides better range and speed.
